Hampshire is a popular holiday area, with tourist attractions including its many seaside resorts, the maritime area in Portsmouth, and the motor museum at Beaulieu. The New Forest National Park lies within the borders, as does a large area of the South Downs. Hampshire has a long maritime history and is famed as home of writers Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.
A significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth is home to the world's oldest dry dock still in use and home to many famous ships, which includes Nelson's famous flagship HMS Victory. Portsmouth remains a major dockyard and base for the Royal Navy.
Winchester's Cathedral, the longest cathedral in Europe, was originally built in 1079. It contains much fine architecture spanning the 11th to the 16th century and is the place of interment of numerous Bishops of Winchester, Anglo-Saxon monarchs and later such as King Canute, as well as Jane Austen.
With the numerous attractions around the Solent, the close proximity to the Isle of Wight and the New Forest's towns and countryside, Hampshire is an ideal area to explore at any time of the year.
